Moapa Valley Progress
The Moapa Valley Pirates volleyball team is in full swing this season and sporting a new coach. Coach Mandie Matheson took over from Coach Matt Messer who will serve as an assistant coach this season. Messer’s schedule was so busy, he felt it necessary to step down.
Matheson has served as an assistant coach for several years. As a student, she was a member of several Pirate Championship teams as a setter.
The Pirates placed third in the league last season with a 8-14 record. They came in behind 2nd place Boulder City and regular season champ Virgin Valley. Boulder beat Virgin in the league tournament last season then lost to Yerington in the semifinals.
Virgin lost to Truckee in the semifinals and Truckee upset the defending three time Champ Yerington lions in the State final to win their first ever Nevada State title in Volleyball.
With 14 state championships, the Pirates own more State Championships than any school in the State. They also have the record with 13 consecutive Championships running from 1991 thru 2003.
This year the Moapa team has some height which they didn’t have last season. But to get back to the State tournament the Pirates will have to stop Rachel Morris from the Bulldogs as she returns. Morris was the MVP from last season. The Pirates are young but with the help of height they should fare well.
Gaining experience as the season moves along will help when tournament time comes around.
