A benefit race was held on Saturday, August 28 for 6-year-old Ethan Mendenhall of Mesquite.

Approximately 150 participants braved the early morning hours to support Ethan, who was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma last fall and is currently undergoing antibody treatments.

The “Ethan’s Team” 5K and 10K races started bright and early at 6:00 a.m. at the Mesquite Rec Center. Following the race, a raffle drawing was held featuring goods and services from about 30 local businesses and individuals.

Race organizer, Ashley Perkins, said that most of the participants were Mesquite residents. “We had a few participants from Moapa Valley,” she said. “And Lin’s Marketplace was awesome because they donated all of the fruit for after the run.”

According to Perkins, Saturday’s benefit race and raffle was successful. “We were able to give about $7,075 to the Mendenhall family for travel and medical expenses.”

Perkins said that Ethan has been responding extremely well to his treatments. “He will finish up his last treatment in December and then will be excited to attend school with his first grade class,” Perkins explained.
