Jeremy Waite, 14, of Logandale, was featured in the August 2010 issue of The Huntin’ Fool Magazine for the incredible buck he almost didn”t get. The feature article written by Jeremy”s uncle Lanny Waite, provides a detailed narrative of the morning that Jeremy shot the buck of a lifetime.
On the fall morning last year when Jeremy and his Uncle Lanny began their rifle hunt, they faced several challenges. First of all, Waite had drawn area 25, which was not known as a great area. Furthermore, before he could leave for his hunt on Friday, Waite had to complete standardized testing at school. The next day, he was expected to play in an important home football game. The time crunch left Waite and his uncle with a small window of less than 24 hours in which to hunt.
On Friday evening, the hunting party retired to their camp without having seen any deer. Undeterred, Uncle Lanny told the group he truly believed there were deer in the area. At 6:45 am Saturday, with less than two hours to hunt, Jeremy and his uncle headed out, having decided to take a doe or a buck.
As they drove their four-wheeler on the high desert road, they spotted a deer from far off, unsure whether it was a buck or doe. They hiked up and down a couple of ridges before Jeremy took several shots at the deer. Jeremy had no idea, but his uncle knew right away that this was the buck of a lifetime. The monster buck was a main frame 32″ wide four-point. The 5th point kickers on both sides made the buck an incredible 37″ wide.
In the end, Jeremy not only scored his buck, he made it to his football game in the nick of time, helping his team score a win and a spot in the playoffs.
