The Moapa Valley High School cheerleaders held a Junior Cheer Camp last week from August 23-26. This annual event is a fun tradition for both the MVHS cheerleaders and for the many young girls who participate in it. The camp gives future cheerleaders an opportunity to learn new skills, while serving as the primary fundraiser for the MVHS cheerleaders.
Junior Cheer Camp has been taking place for many years in Moapa Valley and is a popular end-of-summer activity for local girls. This year’s camp included approximately 70 girls ages three to 13, 23 MVHS cheerleaders and two adult coaches.
While the numbers of camp participants were reportedly down from previous years, the girls who attended had fun learning cheers and interacting with the MVHS cheerleaders. During the camp, the girls were broken down into age groups and each group was instructed at their age level by the energetic MVHS cheerleaders.
Camp participants got to experience a little bit of all things cheerleading. They rotated through different stations and learned some tumbling, jumps and even the fun art of banner painting. Each group learned a chant, a cheer and a dance, all of which they performed for their families and friends at a special performance on Thursday morning.
Each girl who participated received a certificate, a spirit stick (Smarties candy) and a junior cheer camp T-shirt.
Funds raised at the cheer camp help the cheerleaders purchase team favors, treats and supplies, and help offset other expenses throughout the year.
The MVHS cheerleaders are coached by Denise Robison and Shannon Zobrist.
