Community, Lin’s Raise Funds For Cappalappa

Lin’s Marketplace in Overton recently concluded a successful community fundraising effort to benefit the Back To School program at Cappalappa Family Resource Center (CFRC). On Friday, September 3, Lin’s Vice President Rich Jensen and local store manager Daren Leach presented Cappalappa administrator, Penny Vallone with a check for $2,174.

Only $100 of the donation actually came from the Lin’s organization, Leach explained at the presentation. The rest was donated by the customers of Lin’s who chose to buy special “shoes” at the cash register at the time of their purchase.

Each “shoe” purchased was actually a piece of colored card stock with graphics printed on the front, cut in the shape of a shoe. Check out attendants asked customers at the register if they would like to make a donation: white shoes for a donation of $1 and blue shoes for $5. The fundraising campaign took place between July 31 and August 21.

The effort was part of an annual fundraising Lin’s campaign called the We Care program. Normally, Lin’s works with larger charitable organizations in the effort such as the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the McDonald House in Salt Lake City, Jensen explained.

But this year, aware of the ongoing funding woes of Cappalappa FRC, Leach asked the Lin’s corporate headquarters if the Overton store could raise funds for the local organization. “It was essentially the same program we just used it for a local cause,” Leach said. “That way all of the money raised stays right here in the Valley.”

The money donated to CFRC will all go to purchase new shoes for local school children who are in need this year, said Vallone.

“We have a list of around 65 kids that are eligible and participating in our Back to School program,” she said. “This money will help them to have new shoes for school.”

Leach gave the credit for the fundraising success to the Moapa Valley community.

“The bottom line is that this was such a good outcome because of the great people of this community,” he said. “It is a tough time for everyone out there. But people still reached in and gave a little here and a little there and look at what was accomplished.”
