No One Asked Me But… (Sept. 15, 2010)

By Dr. Larry Moses

No one asked me but…It is less than fifty days to the November elections. The Senate race has turned into a dead heat.

What is interesting to me is that there is no real enthusiasm for either candidate. The Democrats settled for Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, but they are “just mild about Harry”. The Republicans, on the other hand, selected the Tea Party supported Sharron Angle. This was done in spite of opposition from old school Republican leaders, who, have since abandoned the party and gone over to support Harry. These Republicans like Harry better than the conservative Democrats in the state. If Harry is elected, he can thank the likes of Bill Raggio, Sue Lowden, Dawn Gibbons and the other Republicans for Reid.

This election is one of the few where everyone’s vote really does count. You may recall Harry has won an election by less than 425 votes in his career and this one may be that close. According to the latest poll, Harry is leading 45 to 44 percent of the vote with a 4 percent margin of error. Let us split the margin of error and bring it to 47 to 46 percent of the vote. That leaves, if my rapid mathematical mind is working, seven percent of the voters to decide the election. Probably four or so percent, of that seven, are supporters of third party candidates. That will leave about three percent of the voters to decide who will win the election.

There is always the “None of the above” vote. This could be the deciding vote for either candidate. If you are a Republican who finds Sharron Angle too extreme for your taste, what do you do? You may find Harry repugnant but cannot bring yourself to vote for Sharron. In an election this close, if you vote for “None of the above,” you have cast a vote for Harry.

Some Nevada Democrats are upset with the fact that Harry Reid has championed the liberal agenda of the Obama/Pelosi coalition. These Democrats may feel these programs are not in their best interest and do not accurately portray the feelings of Nevada Democrats. However, they still cannot bring themselves to vote for Sharron Angle. A Democrat voting for “None of the above” in an election this close is voting for Angle.

This is one of the few elections where your vote may really make a difference. If you are one of those who are thinking about voting “None of the above,” let me encourage you to hold your nose and pick the candidate you dislike the least. Because a “None of the above” vote will only help the one you like least. I find myself in that dilemma. I dislike the extremes of both parties and as a non-partisan, I have for years crossed party lines and voted for individuals in both parties. However, it is very difficult to make decisions when the extremes of the party are the only choices you have.

Do not be fooled by Reid’s attempt to claim the middle ground. He has championed the extreme liberal ideals of the Democratic Party. He has openly admitted he could do no other and maintain his position as Senate Majority Leader.

Likewise, do not be fooled by the National Republicans as they attempt to paint Sharron Angle as more moderate than she is. We in Nevada have a choice; an extreme liberal or an extreme conservative. While it is not a good choice, it is the only one we have.

I believe there are two deciding factors in this election. One is the Republicans for Reid group. You do not see any Democrats for Angle. The other is the “None of the above” group. I believe the second group will probably hurt Angle more than Reid because Democrats have a tendency to vote party when push comes to shove. Republicans have a tendency to abandon ship, like rats off the Titanic, when a candidate they don’t like is nominated. When things get tough Democrats have a tendency to rally to the party, while Republicans circle the wagons and begin to shoot to the center.

In November, we will find out how many people really believe their signs that read “Anyone Butt Harry Reid.” This is one of those elections where, thank goodness, America has the secret ballot. I am going to find it hard to claim I voted for either.

No one asked me but… Insanity runs rampant in Washington, D.C.

For the first time in the history of America, our Secretary of State has filed a report on U.S. human rights violations with the United Nations Human Rights Council. In the past, we have not filed the mandatory report refusing to be judged by countries that have real human rights issues, like beheadings, stonings, religious restriction, mistreatment of women and children, among other things.

Hillary Clinton presented the twenty-nine page report that included criticism of America for its high unemployment rate, hate crimes, poverty, poor housing, lack of access to health care and discriminatory hiring practices. It generally condemns America for its treatment of blacks, Latinos, Muslims, South Asians, Native Americans, gays and lesbians. The report stated the United States welcomes the observation and recommendations from council members that can help us on that road to a more perfect union.

Interestingly enough, Hillary included Arizona’s illegal immigration law as a violation of human rights. While the Arizona law mirrors the federal law, the federal law is not mentioned in the report.

All I need to know about this report is that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) likes it, even though they feel the report does not go far enough in condemning America.

In four years, the United Nations Committee on Human Rights will review to see what America has done to solve these human rights violations. They will then decide what sanctions and fines are to be imposed if we do not meet the standards set by countries like Cameroon, China, Russia and other such paragons of human rights like Iran. I am not sure we will be able to lower our human rights standards to match such countries in only four years.

I repeat, insanity runs rampant in Washington, D.C.

Thought of the week… It was a close election, but one more than the other guy is a landslide in my book.
