Moapa Valley Progress

As the sun set behind a mesa Friday night, in a valley which once saw a high plains drifter wandering about. There was a small stadium lit up and prepared for battle: Cowboy Stadium, in Kanab Utah.

This was where the Moapa Pirates traveled three hours for their 48-7 victory over the Cowboys of Kanab on Friday, September 9.

These battles over the years have been fierce. The Cowboys were 1-2 on the season including a 16-0 loss to Virgin Valley, while the Pirates were searching for their first win of the season.

Moapa had scored only seven points in the first two contests of the season. Friday night they unleashed the offence which, for most of the past several seasons, Pirate fans had become use to.

It was a massacre!

Moapa’s first score came from the arm of Hayden Cooper. He caught a lateral from Kelan Weiss (QB) then sent it 47 yards to Casen Lewis who had broken free by twenty yards and took it into the end zone. The Point after was no good and Moapa was up 6-0.

Then it was the first play of the second quarter that Moapa scored again. This time Weiss kept the ball and ran 14 yards for the second touchdown of the night. Again the point after was no good and the Pirates were up 12-0.

Both Moapa and Kanab went four and out before Casen Lewis caught a pass. But Lewis, while being hit, fumbled the ball at the Moapa 31.

Kanab moved the ball one yard in the next three plays. Then on 4-9 Quamberg hit an open Nielson down field who beat Shane Terrell around the five where he took it in for Kanab’s only score. The point after was good and Moapa had a 12-7 lead.

The Pirates scored again when Weiss ran another keep from 10 yards and then ran another one for the two point conversion making the score 20-7 with 6:06 left in the first half.

Kanab was sacked for a loss, then punted the ball away.

Lewis dropped the ball and Kanab recovered it. However, Moapa lucked out because of an early whistle. The play was done over.

Kanab tried a fake and made the line of scrimmage which was the Kanab 26. Three plays later Riley Soloman went around the left end seven yards for another Pirate touchdown. The point after was good with 2:46 left in the half.

The third quarter started with Moapa receiving a short kick off and took it to the 41. Three plays later Riley Soloman fumbled the ball. Kanab recovered it on the Kanab 41.

The Cowboys moved the ball to the Moapa 38 when Cooper intercepted a Quamberg pass and ran it back to the line of scrimmage. Weiss hit Hayden Waite for 14 yards then Cooper for another 34 yards to the 14 yard line. The third pass of the drive ended up in Cooper’s hands in the end zone. Add the point after and Moapa was leading 34-7 midway through the 3rd period.

A Kanab fumble and another early whistle gave Kanab a second chance after the kickoff. They ended up punting anyway though.

Moapa got the ball at their own 25 with 1:47 left in the third.

Moapa scored again the first play of the fourth quarter when Parker Chappell punched through the line for six points. The point after was good and Moapa was up 41-7.

Moapa’s final score came when Gordon took it in from the one yard line to finish off a 54 yard drive and the Cowboys 48-7.

Kanab finished with 160 yards passing and 96 on the ground for a total of 256 yards of offence.

The Pirates had 277 yards passing and 161 yards on the ground for a total of 438 total yards offence. Weiss rushed for two touch downs and threw for another one.
