The day was bright and the weather was surprisingly temperate on Saturday, September 11. Community members gathered on the grounds of the Old Logandale School to honor the 9/11 Patriot Day and also to recognize Korean War Veterans at a barbecue hosted by VFW Post 8336.

The W. Mack Lyon Jazz Band, along with former members Chad Jones and Makenzie Bush, performed for over an hour to an appreciative audience. Samantha Weber, International Musician, sang and played the guitar.

In between the performances, auctioneer Billy Feeney auctioned off a variety of mystery packages, raising money for the local VFW organization.

A bevy of volunteers manned the grills, cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs, which were served along with a potluck of sides and desserts.

National Patriot Pen Essay award winner Abigail Barnard of Mesquite, delivered her essay “When is the Right Time to Honor our Military Heroes” to an awed crowd.

Those in attendance enjoyed the weather, the company, the music, and the food.

A moment of silence was observed for fallen heroes and in observance of September 11.
