$5.2 Million Allocated for New Senior Center

The Clark County Board of Commissioners approved a number of Capital Expenditures at their last meeting, including $5,290,000 for the construction of a new senior center in Overton and $250,000 for a Parks & Recreation Master Plan for Moapa Valley. The United Seniors, a non-profit organization which provides services for seniors in Moapa Valley, applied for Community Development Block Grant funds to renovate their current center. FEMA Training and MVHS Basketball Reunion

Members of the Moapa Valley Emergency Planning Committee attended a two day FEMA Emergency Planning Course sponsored by Clark County. The course focuses on how to develop an emergency plan. One area of particular concern is a list of available resources in the various areas of Moapa Valley. In case of disaster, Moapa Valley could be cut off from Las Vegas.

The Moapa Valley High School basketball team of 1964, which posted the best record in the history of Moapa Valley basketball (19-2), reunited for the first time in 36 years. The team was coached by Gary Earnest and featured Rex Jensen, David Lyon, Max Davis, Bob Behmer, and Mike Bishop. Members of the team gathered for a reunion of sorts at Carley’s Restaurant. Also in attendance were Assistant Coach Grant Bushman, Bruce Humes, Delton Tom, and Lynn Bowler.

Bowler Elementary Receives National Award and Ballet Folklorico Films Commercial

The National Council of Teachers of English recognized the staff at Grant M. Bowler Elementary for their outstanding efforts in using Language Arts to promote self-esteem among students. The program, headed by Mrs. Phyllis Leavitt, had been in existence since the year previous. “Already we have seen a significant difference in the attitude and behavior of students,” stated Principal Vee Wilson.

St. John’s Catholic Church’s Ballet Folklorico dancers were featured in a television commercial for Fiesta Motors of Las Vegas. The group was invited to perform in the commercial by Frank Perez, the owner of the dealership. Nine local girls participated in the filming. The commercial was made to mark the grand opening of Fiesta Motors.

Clark County Fair Chairman Resigns

Grant M. Bowler, Chairman of the Clark County Fair Board, submitted his resignation in writing. “I didn’t think they would accept it if I tried to tell them,” he stated. Glen Hardy, CCFB Member, stated that he had received the letter from the chairman, but that he had been expecting it. He was hoping Bowler could hold on another six months. “He’s done a lot of work and got things set up pretty well,” Hardy said. The CCFB will meet and reorganize.
