Bullying makes an impact on who you are and who you will become. The effects are everlasting.

On Thursday, September 30 Grant M Bowler Elementary students attended a Bullying Assembly. It was led by a Marvin the Rodeo Clown who participates in Pro Circuit Rodeos.

Marvin said that he knows all there is to know about Bulls. And he knows a lot about Bullying too. That is why he works with the Bullying Hurts program.

School counselor, Robin La Fontaine, coordinated the assembly. She found out the program would be doing ten free assemblies and called right away to have them come to the local school.

The students were told by Marvin that in just three seconds everything can change. He demonstrated this by having a few volunteers come up and stand in a line. He teased the girl at the end of the line and taunted her by telling her that she was last.

“Losers are last!” he said.

Then he told the boy that just because you are in the front of the line doesn’t mean you’ll always be there. Next he told them all to turn around the opposite direction.

“Would you look at that?” he told the girl. “Now you are at the front.” He told the girl. “And he is last.”

He let the kids sit back down then reminded that, “…instead of worrying about being first, we should start worrying about being nice.”

The kids were informed that all bullying starts with a choice. Did I choose to push? Did I choose to wait my turn in line? Marvin wanted to make it clear to the kids that sometimes we have to learn these proper behaviors. And we need to practice them.

At one point he asked the kids what one plus one is. He said, “It’s five. Right?” He used this example to explain that just like we learn to add we have to learn right from wrong behavior too.

Clark County School District policy on bullying states that “Students should report any incidents to a teacher, counselor or school administrator”. The district also claims that it “will not tolerate any forms of harassment and bullying” and it “encourages methods to teach skills to pupils so that the pupils are able to replace inappropriate behavior with positive behavior.”

This bullying assembly was presented by Bullying Hurts, National Senior Pro Rodeo Association, Western Heritage and Education Inc., Las Vegas Events with Las Vegas Chapter of Buffalo Soldiers and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Mounted Unit.
