It was a busy and crowded morning at Bowler Elementary on Thursday, October 14 for the school’s annual Grandparents Day.

Local grandparents, Arlene and Jay Talbot showed up at 8:00 am with their seven grandchildren.

“We have three grandsons and four granddaughters attending Bowler right now” said Arlene.

The couple has been coming to Grandparents day for the past seven years.

By 8:45 over 600 visitors had arrived and the food was gone!

This year Grandparents Day was coordinated by Overton resident and Bowler parent, Dawn Waite, who is the daughter of the Talbots. With her committee, they planned for the breakfast and photos of each of the grandparents with their grandchild. They were also busy all morning cutting the donated melons, and serving muffins and milk.

“The melons were so juicy that we thought it would be better to cut it fresh,” Waite said. “But I think the morning went great. We had twice as many people than we expected and from what was recorded last year.”

Although the food ran out near the end of the line, Grandparents don’t come only for the food. They come to spend time with their grandchildren.

After a small bite to eat many visit the Fall Book Fair. This years’ theme was Heroes. Comic book phrases of “Bam” and “Pow” lined the walls and posters.

The Book Fair had an update with its new cash registers.

“They have scanners now that scan everything, even the pencils,” said Book Fair Co-Chair Jody Doty.

Doty and her Co-Chair Kristy Payne went to a special training session to learn the new system that Scholastic has provided for the fairs.

“It’s really easy to use” said Payne.

A few grandparents peaked into classes and some even took a few minutes to help in the classrooms. Then Grandparents Day ended with an announcement from Bowler’s principal, Shawna Jessen saying, “Thank you for coming and see you next year”.
