Although I am disappointed in some of the legislation supported by Senator Reid and in his support of some high level political leaders, I am going to vote for him in the coming election. I will use a lesson I learned some years ago to explain my position to my friends who are encouraging a different choice.
In a championship basketball game held in the Parowan High School gymnasium a coach decided to defend a rather formidable opponent from the basketball hot bed of Minersville, named Joe Marshall, with a multi-sport athlete named Leo, who was my teammate at the College of Southern Utah. Leo was both wider and stronger than I was and I got to watch 28 minutes of the game from the bench while the Minersville team built a large lead. With the outcome of the game obvious, I got to play the last 4 minutes.
After the game and the post-game shower, as I was tying a shoe I heard our coach ask the young man who kept our score book, “Who scored for us?” The answer, “Larry was our top scorer, in fact he was the game’s high scorer.” The coach said, “No, he couldn’t have been. Let me see the score book.”
Having finished tying my second shoe I looked up in time to see the surprised look on the coach’s face. Leo had done what he could, but he did not stop Joe and he could not score himself, so the 16 points I scored in the last four minutes, could have been many more and the game could have been won.
The point is, a one dimensional player can be used for a short period of time, but over the long haul, you need a multiple skilled person in the game. In the U.S. Senate, Harry Reid is that person. Sharron Angle is not.
Like many of you, I have let Harry down over the years by never once communicating my personal position with regard to the issues he has had to deal with. Let’s do a better job of informing the Senator of the directions we feel he should go, but keep this multi-skilled, vastly experienced person in the game.
