LETTER: What Kind of Friend Is That?

My annual sojourn to the Moapa Valley held a surprise in the October 6 editorial page as two people I am familiar with had letters published. I live outside Washington, D.C. and held the hope that the people of Nevada would help stop the destruction of the Constitution.

But I was stymied when I read that Ace Robison was endorsing Harry Reid based on a longstanding friendship even though he knows Reid is destroying “our individual and collective liberties.”

What kind of friend is that? Where I come from, friends don’t allow their friends to get caught up with the wrong crowd.

Good friends are bound on principle and treat each other with mutual respect based in part on the Declaration of Independence which states that “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Harry’s other friend, Obama, dropped the word ‘Creator’ when quoting the Declaration of Independence recently.

It’s time to remember the true friends of America such as Abraham Lincoln who pointed out that “we all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself; while with others, the same word many mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men’s labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name – liberty, and it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names – liberty and tyranny.”

Other good advice comes from George Washington: “Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation for ‘tis better to be alone than in bad company.”

I’ve heard said that the Constitution will hang by a single thread – what side of the tug of war will you and your friends be on?
