Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley Cross Country Teams travelled to Palo Verde High School for the Southern Nevada League Championships on Saturday, October 16. This 5K (3.1 mile) course stayed on campus, weaving through a soccer field, baseball field, the track, and other areas. There were small hills throughout the course with only one major hill called “Heartbreak Hill” by some runners.

For the first time this season, the boys competed with the full team. The small school race was mixed with the highly competitive 4A schools. Only three teams from 3A and three teams from the 4A can make it to the divisions tournament. Because there are only three 3A schools (Moapa Valley, Virgin Valley, and Boulder City), only the 4A schools had reason to be nervous.

Still, MVHS Senior Josh Thompson beat everyone at Saturday’s race by a long shot. He won the race with a best time of 16:49.

Chase Witter ran a season best time of 17:44 to place second in the small schools race (6th overall). Milas Sendlein continued to improve, knocking 30 seconds off his time and running 19:50. Brendan Watkins and Shae Bryant both improved in their second races back as Watkins finished with 20:07 and Bryant finished in 20:21 to finalize the scoring for the Pirates. Cody Wood and Tyler Reynolds also ran on the Varsity team with Wood at 20:42 and Reynolds running a personal best time of 21:11.

Three other Pirates competed in the Junior Varsity race. Tyler Winzenreid ran a time of 22:16. Ryan Leachman ran 23:09 with Garrett Traasdahl finishing in 23:55.

The Boys won the small schools competition outpacing Laughlin by 15 points and Boulder City by 17.

“We are very happy with the way the boys ran today,” Richard Bush, coach of the Boy’s Cross Country team said. “Once again Josh ran well and Chase led the pack that was trying to catch him. The times are starting to drop and we look very strong. We still have some work to do before the Division Championship at the end of the month, but I am very happy with the way the boys ran today.”

The Girls team also had a very good day with all four runners running season best times. Jessany Mortensen led the Pirates, placing third in the small schools race with 24:47. Kenna McMurray ran a personal best time of 28:01, as did DJ Carter with 28:56. Jessica Robison ran 31:19.

“Things are looking good for Divisions,” Tereasa Boren, coach of the Girl’s Cross Country team commented. “We are proud of all of them.”
