Oil Spill Reported At Reid Gardner Power Station

By Mike Donahue

Moapa Valley Progress

Between 1,000 and 1,500 gallons of oil spilled at the Reid Gardner Generating Station in Moapa on Oct. 5 after a seal in a lubricating oil line ruptured, according to Mark Severts, NV Energy spokesman.

Severts said the majority of the spill was contained in a building at the plant although some did leak onto some dirt and gravel over a layer of asphalt outside.

“Because of the asphalt, there was never a danger that the oil would contaminate the groundwater,” Severts explained. Nevertheless, because the amount of the spill contaminating the outside was over the three cubic yard reporting threshold established by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) “we immediately notified them in a phone call.

“We cleaned up between 3 ½ and 4 cubic yards of material that will be properly disposed of sometime in the future,” he said.

Vinson Guthreau, NDEP spokesman, said Reid Gardner notified his office within 24 hours, the requirement following environmental incidents like the spill.

Guthreau said that after notification, it’s standard NDEP procedure to require a complete written evaluation of the spill.

“The notified us in multiple ways and they have until Nov. 19 to provide us with an evaluation,” he said.

The oil spill occurred the day after a public hearing was held in Moapa addressing a request by Reid Gardner to modify its Class III landfill.

During the meeting members of the Moapa Band of Paiutes, whose reservation abuts Reid Gardner, and other members of the public expressed fears about the health effects from the plant operations and the wisdom of extending the life of coal-generated power plants in general.

They urged health authorities to deny the NV Energy request because of suspected health dangers from the plant and on-site waste disposal.
