The 2010 Las Vegas Middle School Classic Cheer and Dance Competition was held on Saturday, March 6 at Silverado High School. Two teams from W. Mack Lyon Middle School were in attendance, Lyon Locomotion and the Mack Lyon Cheerleading squad.

The Mack Lyon Locomotion Dance Team performed on Saturday at the Las Vegas Classic Competition at Silverado High School.
Lyon Locomotion, the school's dance team, competed in two group divisions. The first was the dance team division where they won first place with a lyrical dance choreographed by Karina Acosta, Kepher Bullock and Tahne German, all of whom are seventh graders. The second division was in Hip Hop where the girls placed second. This dance was choreographed by Team Captain Abbey Henson and Co-captain Madisyn Griffiths.

The local middle school dance team was up against some stiff competition. "Our competition was tough," said Locomotion coach Irene Barlow. "They had to go up against the two toughest schools in both divisions."

The Mack Lyon Middle School Cheerleading squad competed in the Las Vegas Classic Competition on Saturday. The girls came away with a first place and a third place trophy in two categories. Lyon student Hannah Hendrix was the only girl on the team who competed in the individual dance division. Hannah choreographed and performed her own solo dance. "She did a great job," said Barlow.

Barlow emphasized that the competition had come at the end of an exhausting week. The girls had spent the week in school, at practice after school, performing at basketball games and some even had attended the Pirate Motion Junior Dance Camp at the high school as well.

"I am so proud of all the girls," Barlow said of her team. "They worked really hard to earn these awards and nobody deserved them more.

The results from the Mack Lyon Cheerleading squad were equally impressive. The team took first place in the Poms division which includes mainly dance moves: kick lines, jumps etc. In the Stunt Show Cheer division the team took third place.

The team received these awards out of a field of fourteen other schools. Many of the other schools were formidable competitors, according to Lyon Cheer coach Paula Chappell. "We were up against some very big schools," Chappell said. "A lot of those schools are feeders for 4A schools and have 1400 - 2000 students."

Mack Lyon has only about 450 students enrolled.

On top of that, the Lyon Cheerleading squad has experienced a little instability this year. The team has had trouble keeping a coach and has run through several different coaches throughout the year.

Three weeks ago, Chappell who had retired from the position of cheerleading coach last spring, was act to come back and get the girls ready for the final competition. She accepted the challenge.

In only six practices, the team prepared two routines for the competition. "We had some long practices," Chappell said. "They usually started right after school and went until 6 or 7 p.m. They are very talented girls and they did a great job!"
