After the dominating performance at the Southern Division meet last week, the Pirates were hoping to finally bring a team State Championship to Moapa Valley High School. Unfortunately, the addition of teams from the Northern League derailed that goal as South Tahoe defeated the Pirates 38 to 50 for the State Title.

The state final 2010 Cross Country meet was held in Boulder City on Saturday, November 6. The Pirates came away as the 2010 State Runner up for the second year in a row, holding off Elko (59) and Fernley (76).

As usual, the team was lead by the duo of Josh Thompson and Chase Witter.

Thompson succeeded in defending his individual State Title, crossing the finish line in 17 minutes. Witter placed second with 17:44.

“I am very happy for Chase,” Richard Bush, coach of the boy’s cross country team said. “Over the last couple of years, he’s put a lot of pressure on himself. To see him cross that finish line, behind only Josh; it’s got to be a good feeling for him.”

Shae Bryant and Brendan Watkins battled back and forth throughout the race, finishing 15th and 16th respectively overall with times of 19:01 and 19:03. Then, Milas Sendlein placed 27th with 19:54. Cody Wood placed 32nd with 20:39 and Tyler Winzenreid completed the boy’s team, placing 39th in 22:13.

“This was a tough result to deal with for all of us,” Bush reported. “The boys competed very hard, they worked hard all season, and it’s difficult to see them not come out of this meet as the champions.

“I’m very proud of the work and effort these boys have put forth,” Bush continued. “And even more impressed with how they have dealt with the circumstances. To be the 2nd place team in the state for two straight seasons is still a big accomplishment.”

For the girls, Senior Jessany Mortensen and Freshman DJ Carter also competed in the State Meet. Both Lady Pirates ran personal best times for the course. Mortensen placed 30th overall in 25:05 and Carter placed 37th in 28:29.

“Most people run slower on that course,” Tereasa Boren, coach of the girls team said. “But the girls ran really well. They ran the way they planned and I’m really happy with how they did.”

This meet concludes the Cross Country season.
