County Releases Local Voter Results

By Vernon Robison

Moapa Valley Progress

The Clark County Board of Commissioners certified the County Election Department’s official Statement of Votes in a meeting held Wednesday, November 10. This document breaks down the county-wide voting results by precinct and allows specific analysis of how residents in Moapa Valley voted in the 2010 General Election.

Voter turnout for the election was relatively high in southern Nevada. About 63.3 percent of registered voters in Clark County cast ballots in the general election, the highest turnout for a nonpresidential election in 20 years, according to the official statement presented to the commissioners by Larry Lomax, county registrar of voters.

In Moapa Valley, 2,876 voters participated in the election which represented a turnout of about 70 percent of registered voters in the community.

In most of the races, Moapa Valley voters fell directly in line with the rest of state and with Clark County in election results. But in several cases local results were significantly different than the election outcome.

In the bitterly contested race for U.S. Senate, Republican candidate Sharon Angle won in Moapa Valley precincts by a landslide with 72 percent of the vote. But incumbent Harry Reid kept the seat with over 54 percent of the vote in Clark County and 50 percent of the vote state-wide.

In the race for Nevada Attorney General, incumbent Catherine Cortez-Masto easily won re-election with 53 percent of the vote state-wide. But Moapa Valley voters preferred Republican candidate Travis Barrick who took 50 percent of the local votes.

Three of the judicial races had local results that differed from the final outcome. In District Court Dept. 28, Ron Israel won against Jack Howard with 54 percent of the vote. But in Moapa Valley Howard was a clear favorite with 53 percent. In District Court Dept. 31, sixty percent local voters overwhelming preferred Phil Dabney. But Joanna Kishner narrowly won the election by about 1,000 votes. In Family Court F, John Eccles was a clear local favorite taking 59 percent of the local vote. But Bill Gonzalez won the seat with 55 percent of the county-wide vote.

Local voters also disagreed with county voters in the results of county administrative elections. In the county assessor’s race, Michele Shafe (D) who won with 53 percent of the county vote, would have lost in Moapa Valley precincts to Gerrit Hale ( R) who garnered 61% of local votes. County Clerk Diana Alba (D) was re-elected with 56 percent of county votes. But local voters preferred challenger Scott Austin (R) who took 58 percent of local votes. Debbie Conway (D) was reelected as county recorder with 53 percent of the vote. But in Moapa Valley it was Jim Edwards who took 63 percent of local votes. In the race for county treasurer, Moapa Valley residents preferred Mike Javornicky (R) who took 53 percent of the local vote. But incumbent Laura Fitzpatrick (D) was the clear favorite with 62 percent of the county vote.

The following are the official votes cast in the Primary Election in all Moapa and Moapa Valley precincts. An asterisk (*) indicates an election winner that differs from the local results.
