Loyal fans of the Ultimate Frisbee league last Thursday evening crowded into Overton Park to cheer on their favorite teams despite temperatures that felt frigidly cold.

There were few stars out and although temperatures hovered near 40 degrees earlier rains made it feel damp and frosty.

It was the last games of the season and fans were ready to brave anything to support the newest sport to hit Moapa Valley.

Clark County Parks and Recreation (CCPR) started the Ultimate Frisbee league for adults last fall.

The rules are almost the same as flag football except the football is a Frisbee, there must be at least seven players on the field at any given time, two of whom must be female, and the Frisbee is moved around the field by throwing it to teammates.

This year four teams signed up for the league, some of which had 15 members. CCPR staff were surprised to find the teams were very competitive. Most games were close.

The season began Nov. 4 and game days generally brought double headers with each game lasting about an hour.

Players and spectators scoff at inclement weather as demonstrated last Thursday.

“We only expected to have enough people sign up for two teams, instead we were able to have four,” according to CCPR’s Theresa Briggs, who was proud of the turnout. “The teams have played extremely competitively throughout the season.”

The Hammertime team was this season’s winner although it only won the last of its two games Thursday.

Team members include R.J. Briggs, A.J. Briggs, Michelle Dransfield, Will Dransfield, Misty McDonald, Jason McDonald, Tracy Omer, Josh Omer, Kevin Dotson, Ben Dotson, Matt Stankowski, Marco Macias, Charlie Bush,

Ver Moyer and Sharleis Adams.
