By Dave Belcher

Moapa Valley Progress

The Lady Pirate Basketball team finish sixth in the Las Vegas Invitational held last week December 21-23 at Mountain View High School.

In their first game on Tuesday, the Lady pirates beat Fairmont Prep out of California 51 – 33.

The Pirates jumped out to a 16 -5 lead after the first quarter. Then extended the lead at half time 29 – 12.

Amanda Campbell led the Pirates in scoring with 11 points and 13 rebounds as she dominated the low post for the ladies.

The third quarter was the same as Moapa continued to build their lead with a score of 42 – 20 after the third. The back ups finished the game and Moapa finished off Fairmont 51 -33 to gain the right to play Gig Harbor from Washington State in the quarter final.

Here’s the scoring break down for Moapa. Smith 1, Noto 10, Harding 2, LaCroix 2, P. Leavitt 3, Campbell 11, Denman-Gray 8, H. Leavitt 4, Gifford 10.

Up against Gig Harbor, Moapa found themselves down 45 – 24 after three quarters.

It was in the fourth quarter that the game started to turn around for the Pirates. Campbell started the fourth quarter scoring the first seven points and getting the Pirates rolling. She had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the game.

Chanel Lacroix then knocked down three “3s” and scored 21 points in the first six minutes of the final quarter cutting a 21 point lead to five.

Ashley Noto scored 12 points including a “3” with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. But that was it as Moapa scored 24 points in the final quarter the same amount as they had for the game prior to the fourth and still lost 53 – 48 to Gig Harbor.

Here’s the scoring break down: Noto 12, Harding 2, LaCroix 11, P. Leavitt 7, Campbell 14, Denman-Gray 2.

The Pirates then played Lake Mead on Wednesday and completely destroyed the Eagles 68 – 25. It was Shelby Gray who did the damage this time as the sophomore scored 21 points followed by Campbell’s 13 and Brianna Harding 11 in the rout. The Pirates lead by 23 at the half, 37-17.

Thursday saw an exciting game as the Ladies took on the host team Mountain View for 5th place.

Moapa took a 14 – 12 lead after the first quarter. Then, as it has happened on several occasions during this season, the Pirates came up with only two points in a quarter, the second.

That low score in the quarter would prove to be their downfall. The Saints scored eleven points for the second quarter and held a seven point 23 – 16 lead going into the half.

Ashley Noto lead the Pirates in scoring with 12, Campbell had 11 and 21 rebounds. Gray had 6 points and 9 rebounds. Harding, Shalynn Couse and P Leavitt each had 2 with Crouse gathering 11 boards.

The Pirates cut the score to a one point lead twice but it was the Saints going 4-5 from the line in the final 28 seconds that iced the game with a final score of 43 – 35. The Saints marched in with a fifth place finish.
