Several Moapa Valley youngsters were some of the lucky beneficiaries of the 6th Annual Golf Fore Kids Tournament in Mesquite last month when more than $30,000 in toys and cash was donated to help make their holiday season a happy one.
The annual toy-drive tournament was played Dec. 14 on four Mesquite courses, Falcon Ridge, Canyons, Palms and Conestoga, by golfers who were asked to donate $50 in toys to participate, said Mindee West, Falcon Ridge Golf Course office manager.
“We got about 450 golfers who contributed $23,000 worth of toys,” she said. “All the toys were given to the Salvation Army which delivered them to elementary schools in Moapa Valley and Littlefield-Beaver Dam, AZ.”
Toys this year went to local kids who were selected by the teachers at Grant Bowler Elementary School in Moapa Valley, West said.
In addition to the toys, the tournament raised $10,000 in cash, she said. Half went to the “Shop With a Cop” program and half went to Heidi’s Cottage, which helps needy Mesquite families.
“The tournament was a great success this year and, like always, the kids are the real winners,” she said.
