Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley Pirate Wrestlers traveled to Eldorado High School in Las Vegas on December 28-29 to participate in the Eldorado Rumble. This is the first time the Pirates have participated in this tournament.

This year the Rumble consisted of 19 teams. One of the teams was from Santa Ana California another from Tempe Arizona and all others were from the Las Vegas area.

Although Moapa was the only 3A school, the Pirates wrestled hard and made a good showing. The first day a total of 261 wrestlers grappled trying to earn a spot in an eight man bracket held on Thursday. Each wrestler saw at least three or four matches the first day and the top eight athletes were ceded into the bracket on the second day. Unfortunately, ten of the Pirates were eliminated from the bracket wrestling after Thursday morning.

Those left in the tournament were 135 pound Shae Bryant, 152 pound Trevor Durham, 160 pound Parker Chappell and 189 pound Zach Staley.

The remaining four wrestlers battled hard and three of the four ended up in the championship round.

Shae Bryant wrestled Leet from Palo Verde and beat the Panther on points to take first place.

Trevor Durham after an upset in the semifinals went on to wrestle Seals from Desert Pines and lost by a fall to Seals. Trevor finished in second place at 152 pounds.

Parker Chappell had an impressive streak into the championship round with seven straight pins all in the first period. He wrestled Ray Waters from Spring Valley in the championship round and was defeated on points. Parker finished in second place in the 160 pound weight class.

Zach Staley looked good after being out for a couple weeks trying to mend an injured knee. Zach only lost one match leading into the eight man bracket. He defeated his first match by a pin and advanced into the semifinal round. Zach fought hard and lost a close match to Herrara from Santa Ana, California. He then withdrew from the tournament to avoid further aggravation to his knee. Zach finished with a fourth place medal in the 189 pound weight class.

At the end of the grueling two day tournament the top team in the tournament was Santa Ana, California. Spring Valley, Nevada finished in second place and Tempe, Arizona finished in third.

Although Moapa Valley was the only 3A school in the tournament, the Pirates finished in sixth place.

The Pirate’s next meet is today at home. The Pirates will have team duals against the Silverado Skyhawks and the Patriots from Liberty High School. Then they travel to Cedar City to compete at the Iron Town Duals on Friday and Saturday.
