Pirates Mauled At Home By Spring Valley Grizzlies

The Moapa boys basketball team were attacked by the Grizzles and were beaten 62-55. The Spring Valley High School Grizzlies came to Gary Batchlor Gymnasium on Monday, January 10 and ripped the win off.

The Grizz used a 17-6 final seven minutes of the game to take and create distance between them and Moapa including going 10 for 12 from the line down the stretch.

Spring Valley led the game after the 1st quarter 16-12.

The grizz were extremely fast as they were able to beat the Pirates up and down the floor. They jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Josh Thompson knocked down a three ball mid-way through the 1st quarter.

Moapa took their first lead with three minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Kelan Weiss hit two free throws and gave Moapa a 22-21 lead. They took a 26-23 lead into the locker room at half time.

Spring Valley shot 6-9 from the line in the first half while the Pirates shot 11-14.

It was during this quarter that Gary Paton of the Grizzlies took over. Paton scored 16 of their 20 points in the third quarter finishing the quarter with a dunk after a steal and tying the score at 43’s going into the final quarter.

Moapa turned the ball over and over and over; throughout the 4th quarter allowing the Grizzlies to score 19 points to the Pirates 12. Ten of those came from the free throw line as they went 10 of 13 in the 4th.

Moapa will host the Bulldogs of Virgin Valley this Friday night in a critical game. The winner will be in sole possession of first place looking for the first round bye in the league playoffs next month.

Girls play at 6:00 p.m. the Boys will tip at 7:30 p.m.

  1. I wouldn’t hardly call a seven point loss a mauling… I know it fits with the “Grizzly” mascot but show some decency. It sure creates a moral boots for the players when they read the paper
