Fishing On Lake Mead (January 26, 2011)

Boat Repairs and Fishing

By Loren Brooks

Boyd Brown came over at 1:27 pm and spent two hours helping replace a wheel bearing and seal on the boat trailer. We also put the water phones on the 125 hp Mariner, to check and see if there was any damage from some prop damage we experienced last Monday. We felt pretty good about the test run, not finding any unusual noise or play in the shaft.

The bad news is the fact that the parts house (RV & Boat store) at St. George sold me the wrong size prop. I even took the old prop in to be sure. The parts manager was a wise guy. He sold me a 14 1/8 hub, 4 blade, when in fact the motor requires a 13 3/8th. Now that costs me another trip to St. George for an exchange and get the right size.

In the mean time I will be using the 17 pitch spare three blade prop. It does not perform as well as the 19 pitch 3 blade, which was damaged from hitting a log.

We went out on Friday and only caught one striper. We had four strikes, two of which, could have been BIG FISH. We were fishing Roger Springs Bay.

A fisherman at the dock said he landed an 18 pound Striper at the Glory Hole, last week. He said they caught five at the Glory Hole Friday (Three people on his boat).

One of the jet boats from Echo caught eight striper (three guys).

Bud, Junior and Doug caught three on Friday. A perfect day with no wind.

Still lots of dangerous debris on the lake going north past Marker 18. Big areas of wood floating all over the lake north of Echo.

Stay in touch on channel 5 if you are out on the lake.

Wind, Wind And More Wind!

By Randy Hegg

The beautiful 70 degree weather decided to leave us over the weekend and bless us with a cold north wind and some nasty waves. But, I was still able to catch a few fish.

Sunday morning we started out about 7:00 am out of Echo Bay and immediately returned to the tires after seeing and feeling 3-5 footers roll into the boat. Also there was a bunch of debris in the water from the wind switching to the north and the lake going up so much.

Anyone who is going out, I urge to be very careful. I saw debris from little sticks to flat out trees going by my boat.

The wind calmed down around 10:00 am and I went out straight across the lake from the marina. I saw some bait balls on my fish finder and it wasn’t a few minutes after putting out my lines, I was into a nice school of striper.

Caught 10 fish in the 1-5 pound class in about two hours. Those fish made up for the misery before.
