Moapa Valley Progress

The Lady Pirates played host to the Lady Mustangs of Shadow Ridge from Las Vegas on Wednesday, January 26.

The game started very slowly. It seemed that neither team could make a shot. It wasn’t until 3:30 was left in the first quarter that Shadow Ridge finally broke a 0-0 tie with a lay up. One minute later the Lady Mustangs took a 4 point lead with a hoop just inside the “3” point line.

Moapa’s first points came with two minutes to go in the first quarter when Paige Leavitt got a put back. Breanna Harding gave Moapa the lead with two lay ups sandwiching a free throw as the Lady Pirates led 7-4 after the first quarter.

Moapa pressed with a 2-1-2 zone full court press to start the second quarter. The Mustangs couldn’t handle the pressure and Moapa’s shooting slump broke. The Lady Pirates opened up a 20 to 4 lead midway through the second quarter. The press led to layup after layup for Moapa and a 13 point run before Shadow Ridge scored their only lay up with 2:50 left on the clock.

The final minute of the quarter saw an Amanda Campbell lay up. Then Campbell blocked a shot which led to Hanna Leavitt knocking down a five footer.

After a Mustang “3” ball with 8 seconds left in the quarter Hanna Leavitt took the inbound pass dribbled to half court and let it fly as the buzzer blasted. The shot dropped through the rim. The crowd erupted and the official looked across the court to his partner then raised his hands above his head indicating the shot was good. Again the crowd erupted.

Moapa shot 4-8 from the line. Shadow Ridge shot 1-7.

Hanna Leavitt came out in the third quarter hot, as she hit two more “3” balls in the first minute and a half.

The Lady Pirates outscored Shadow Ridge 14-5 in the 3rd for a 41-17 lead to end the quarter. Shadow Ridge was 1 for 8 from the line as Moapa continued the pressure through the third. Moapa’s backups finished the game as the Lady Pirates coasted to a 47-33 win.

Amanda Campbell pulled down 15 rebounds. The Pirates shot 6 for 11 from the line while Shadow Ridge was 6 for 19.

Lady Pirates traveled to Bonanza this week and Boulder City this Friday.
