Moapa Valley Progress

On Wednesday night The Pirate boys’ basketball team traveled to Shadow Ridge High School in Las Vegas on Wednesday, January 26. The Mustangs had a record of 4-15. Previously they had played Virgin Valley and beat them 60-45 on the 10th of December. Then the Bulldogs beat them 66-52 five days later. Both games were in Mesquite.

The Mustangs started out hot as they opened up 22-11 lead after the 1st quarter. Junior 6’5” David Everage who scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds in the game kept control in the first.

The Pirates started to come back in the second quarter as they outscored the Mustangs by one in the second quarter with 16 points in the quarter.

Coach Larsen made a few defensive adjustments as the Pirate pressure forced turnovers and missed shots for the Mustangs. Moapa rebounded and scored 23 points in the quarter. Hayden Cooper led the charge with 18 points in the game. Casen Lewis complemented Cooper’s 18 with 16 points of his own. The Mustangs scored 15 in the quarter and held on for a two point lead after the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter Shadow Ridge couldn’t make a basket for any reason. Midway through the quarter the Pirates took a six point lead and with trips to the line and a continuation of defensive pressure, Moapa pulled away and finished the game on a 19 to 6 run and a 69-58 victory. Moapa was 18 for 26 from the line for 69%. Shadow Ridge was 15 for 26 for 58%.

Cooper ended with 18 with Lewis scoring 16. Dakota Watters had 11, Milas Sendlein scored 10. Josh Thompson had 6 with Shane Terrell and Kelan Weiss scoring 4 a piece.

Moapa has now finished the games with Vegas schools. This Friday the Pirates travel to Boulder City for a rematch with the Eagles. The Pirates beat Boulder 65-54 a couple weeks ago. The girls will play at 6 p.m. with the boy’s game at 7:30. Moapa is currently 2nd in league play.
