The Yellow Brick Road will lead right into the Logandale Fairgrounds Fine Arts Building this year for the Clark County Fair. So put on your ruby slippers, tap your heels three times and get ready to join the fun!

The Clark County Fair & Rodeo is just two months away and the Fine Arts committee is already deep into the planning stages for this year’s extravaganza. This year’s theme: The Wizard Of Oz; has all the volunteers abuzz choosing paper and props. They have been busy with designing a route that will lead visitors to the Wizard as they walk through the various exhibits.

There might not be lions and tigers and bears but there will be Photography coordinated by board member Amy Mills, Creative Arts under Tayna Holmstead, Industrial Arts and Sciences coordinated by Cyndi Goodrich, Home Science with Amy Houghtalen and Home and Fine Arts coordinated by Linda Hanks, Marilyn Perkins and Emily Olson. All these exhibit categories promise to entice the participant and to enthrall the fair attendee.

Within this magical land will also be a field of flowers found on the way to the Emerald City contained within the Horticulture exhibit area coordinated by Barbara Postlethwait.

“Because of the wonderful things you do” the committee is looking forward to filling the building with arts and crafts from the local community.

In recent years, the Fine Arts exhibit at the Fair has struggled to fill its space with entries. Last year’s exhibit entries were far below the average year, said Fair Fine Arts Director Margaret Houston. She commented that the 2010 entries were less than half of previous years. In some of the classes it was only a quarter of the usual number of entries.

Though entries are actively recruited and welcome from all throughout the county, the Fine Arts exhibit always depends on local entries to make it a successful show. So now is the time for local folks to start making plans on what to enter in the Fair.

Houston encourages people to look around them for things that they can enter. “Everyone has some little thing that they do,” Houston said. “It’s just hundreds of those kinds of little things that make a Fair exhibit really special.”

The Fair is a great opportunity for the kids in the community to show off what they can do. They can enter school projects, pictures that they have drawn, crafts that they have made or goodies that they have baked. That little bit of effort is well worth it when the kids and their family members see their entries on exhibit at the Fair, Houston said.

Entries may include fine arts, crafts, quilts, sewing, needlework, scrapbooking items, bottled fruits and vegetables, perishable food items and a host of other miscellaneous items.

The horticultural exhibit welcomes local gardeners to bring in their flowers, vegetables and herbs to be enjoyed on display at the Fair.

The Fine Arts committee members are excited for the upcoming exhibit. The committee is made up of volunteers that have been doing this for years. Some say that they were ‘volunteered’ by family members or friends. But most agree that they continue to do this because they are “hooked” – hooked on decorating, organizing and being involved with the community. It is a lot of work but also a lot of fun and very fulfilling, they all chorused.
