Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley High School boy’s basketball team won both of its games last week, 68-47 against Bonanza, and 75-70 against Boulder City. Moapa will face the Virgin Valley Bulldogs on Friday night in Mesquite for the final regular season game.

Bonanza High School came into the Gary Batchelor Gymnasium believing they were going to beat their 3A opponent and after the first period it looked and felt like they were going to do just that. Bonanza finished the first quarter on a 9-2 run to end the quarter with a 15-10. Casen Lewis scored 4 of Moapa’s ten points in the quarter. Shane Terrill started the 2nd quarter with a “3” ball and started the ball rolling on a 17 point 2nd quarter for Moapa. The Pirates knocked down three“3’s” for the quarter. Terrill, Riley Soloman and Josh Thompson’s hit the third with 25 seconds left to give the Pirates a half time led of 27-26.

It was during the third quarter that the Moapa defense came to life and shut down the Bengals offense. Bonanza did not make a single field goal during the 3rd quarter. They went to the free throw line six times and came away with only three points, their only 3 points of the quarter. Kelan Weiss had 6 points to lead Moapa in scoring in the quarter. Moapa scored 5 layups after turnovers by Bonanza and the Pirates took a commanding 45-29 led after the third on an 18-3 run.

Bonanza’s shooting didn’t improve much during the 4th quarter as they made two field goals. The first came as a “3” ball with 6:21 left in the game. The final one came with thirty second left.

Moapa on the other hand scored 23 in the quarter. Bonanza had 19 free throws which is how the Bengals scored 12 of the 17 for the quarter.

In the second half Bonanza made 15 of 25 from the line. They scored 20 points in the second half. Bonanza was 18 of 29 for the game from the line. Moapa shot 17 for 27 from the line for the game.

Kelan Weiss lead the team in scoring with 11 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Hayden Cooper scored a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Milas Sendlein added 9; Lewis and Shane Terril each had 8 points. Josh Thompson scored 7 points while Danny Kincaid added 4, Riley Soloman had 3 and Geoff Hilton scored 2.

On Friday Moapa then traveled to Boulder City for the third league game of the season. The Pirates are in second place with a 1-1 record in league.

Virgin Valley is 2-0 while Boulder is 0-2. The Pirates beat the Eagles 75-70 in a hard fought game which had 72 free throws combined for the game.

Boulder City opened the game with a 15-9 lead after the first quarter. The place was rocking.

But the Moapa offense and defense came alive during the second quarter as Boulder City was shut down, scoring only 9 points to Moapa’s 24.

It was Josh Thompson who led the Pirate barrage with 21 points for the game.

Moapa took a 33-24 lead into the locker room at half.

The hot handed Pirates continued by out-scoring the Eagles 23-21 who were scraping for anything they could get.

Moapa ended the third with a 56-45 lead. Boulder City’s offense which was led by Trevor Montgomery’s 21 points didn’t give up as they whittled the Pirate lead away and lost by 5, 75-70.

Nate Hafen was held to his season average as he scored 15. Moapa was led by Thompson’s 21 then Hayden Cooper’s 15. Casen Lewis added 11 points while Dakota Watters donated 10. Shane Terrill scored 6. Sendlein, Kincaid and Soloman each had 4.

Moapa travels to the Dawg house Friday night to try and grab a piece of the league Championship. In the last matchup Moapa had their worst performance of the season when the Dawgs laid a real beatin’ on the Pirates. Moapa and Virgin Valley have met twice this season with the Bulldogs winning both matchups.

Good luck Pirates.

Boy’s play at 7:30.
