Moapa Valley Progress
As the time for State Competition draws near, the Moapa Valley Forensics Team has stepped up its efforts. At the County Tournament, held at Silverado, the team did not disappoint. This tournament was three days long, spanning February 10-12.
John Rockenbach had a strong showing, placing fifth overall in Prose and second in Expository speaking.
Jacob Allum, who along with Rockenbach brought home the Expository Cup at State last year, placed sixth overall in Expository Speaking.
Alyssa Zerkle placed third with her Dramatic Interpretation, A Child Called It, a true story based on the life of the author.
Calvin McMurray went to finals in Foreign Extemporeanous Speaking and placed fifth overall.
The team also placed well in the debate portion of the tournament. John Rockenbach placed 2nd overall in Varsity LD. Calvin McMurray took third in the same event, allowing two Moapa Valley debaters to place in the top three spots. Jacob Allum, Alyssa Zerkle, and Tucker Abbott all won a spot in Congress finals, called Super Congress.
Tucker Abbott, who went to Nationals in Congress last year, was able to take third overall.
“I think that our team did excellent at this tournament,” said MVHS Debate President Calvin McMurray. “We performed well, and if this tournament is any indicator, we will dominate at state.”
When all the points were tabulated, Moapa won the sweepstakes award for small schools, continuing their undefeated reign this year. Moapa Valley is in the final stretch of their quest for a sixth straight state title.
