Two Men Engage In Crime Spree In Downtown Overton

Moapa Valley Progress

Two men went on a wild crime spree in downtown Overton on Sunday night and into early Monday morning. William Thomas Bonnie, 29 and his brother Joseph Edward Bonnie, 25, were arrested shortly after midnight and charged with Auto Burglary and Injuring/Tampering with a motor vehicle. William was also charged with Grand Larceny Auto. Joseph was charged with Battery by a Prisoner.

According to Metro Police offficials, the two subjects began their short crime spree around 11:00 pm in downtown Overton when they burglarized a vehicle parked in the Moapa Valley Credit Union parking lot.

The subjects then crossed the street and entered the Sportsmans Bar where the owner of the burglarized vehicle observed them making calls on a cell phone which appeared to be one that he had left in his car and which the subjects had apparently taken from the vehicle. The vehicle owner reportedly confronted the subjects. An altercation then ensued where the subjects threatened the victim and challenged him to fight, police said.

After leaving the bar, the subjects reportedly took a paving stone from the yard in front of the former Light Realty offices and used it to smash out the front windshield of the burglarized vehicle.

The subjects were confronted again by the vehicle’s owner and a bar employee and the subjects split up and fled on foot.

Metro officers were then called to the scene. Local officers Corey Estes and Nate Boss, both on duty and nearby, responded to the scene.

William Bonnie was seen fleeing through the Ace Hardware parking lot with a flashlight in his hand. Joseph Bonnie fled toward the Plaza Motel.

A short time later, Officer Boss saw a vehicle driving evasively near the scene. In following up the officers located the same vehicle a few moments later abandoned at the Sugar’s Parking Lot. Officers contacted the owner of the vehicle and found that it had just been stolen from a nearby residence.

The officers called for air support from Metro Air Unit which is equipped with infrared night vision technology. A thorough search of the area was conducted.

Multiple Overton residents who were awakened by the Air Unit contacted Metro to report suspicious subjects walking near their homes.

Both subjects were eventually located and taken into custody. Neither of the men are currently permanent Moapa Valley residents but police said that they both have ties with the community.
