Fishing On Lake Mead

Bud Barber holding a 15 pound striper that he caught on Friday, February 18.

By Loren Brooks

A nice striper was landed by Bud Barber on Friday in the Overton Arm of Lake Mead. Bud and Junior caught a total of 24 Striper today jigging with lures. They said the wind was calm Friday and most of the debris had been blown north, from the big wind experienced on Wednesday.

The previous Monday (Feb. 14) saw totally different conditions on the water. Loren, Boyd and Phillip, launched at Echo and while proceeding north at about 20 mph, in the 19 foot Starcraft, they hit a huge log that almost capsized the boat.

We were watching for logs and other debris, with Loren at the helm, standing up, keeping an eye on the water to avoid any major collision. About 1 mile south of the Glory Hole, on the east side of the Overton Arm, we collided with a big log, that rolled under the boat, and jerked the boat side ways. The impact was such that it just about threw us out of the boat, and killed the motor. This is the time when life jackets are an absolute must.

We are sorry to admit we did not have our life jackets on at the time of this collision. The force killed the engine and stunned us as we survived the incident. There was no damage to the boat or motor.

The fishing report for Monday, included a good catch of nine fish for Ron and John, six fish for Paul, five fish for Loren, Boyd and Phillip. Joe Kelley and his wife (Paul’s neighbor) were trolling with all the rest of us in the north arm, dodging wood, as if we were in a saw mill of sawdust, lumber, and one big chopping block that must have weighed 50 pounds. One boat fished south of Echo Bay and caught five.

Beware of the debris and take it slow in waters up on the north end.

Congratulations to Bud and Junior who had a great time Friday, February 18, landing the 24 fish. Junior said there were five of the 24 fish well over four pounds each, and two that were five pounds, plus the monster that Bud caught which weighed 15 pounds. It was 36 inches long, and had a girth of 21 inches.
