Perkins Receives $140,000 for Reading Program

Ute Perkins Elementary received a grant for $140,000 from the State Legislature to be used to boost the school’s reading programs. The grant monies were earmarked by the State Legislature to be used for innovative reading programs. Perkins planned to use the grant to bring two new reading programs to the school: READ 180 and Breakthrough to Literacy.

Name Chosen for Old School Building

Members of the Old Logandale School Historical and Cultural Society Board of Directors met to discuss the name of the old building. Board member Lynn Bowler suggested the name Old Logandale School Historical and Cultural Society to the board, and after some discussion, the board agreed on the name.

Police Break Up Local Bike Theft Ring

A bicycle theft ring in Moapa Valley was broken up by Metropolitan Police. Four local juveniles were arrested on charges of bicycle theft after weeks of investigation by the officers. Some of the bikes, valued at over $500, had been disassembled and parts were sold or traded to other parties.

Longman and Whitmore Capture State Wrestling Titles

Greg Longman and Tyler Whitmore made it back-to-back titles as they defended their State Championships of a year ago. Longman is a senior and finished the year undefeated. He wrestles in the 152 lb weight class. Whitmore is a junior who wrestles at the 103 lb level. He will have an opportunity to return next year and three-peat as a State champion.
