The Logandale LDS Stake Center on St. Joseph Street was a flurry of activity last Wednesday as 25 volunteers cut, layered, knotted and sewed their way through a pile of donated batting and material to produce twelve warm comforters for the needy.
Most of the volunteers for the 2nd Annual Humanitarian Aid Quilting Day came locally from the 12 Logandale and Overton LDS wards which includes a Spanish branch and a singles branch. Two young LDS missionaries from the Nevada Las Vegas Mission, Casey Stone of Wenatchee, WA, and Nathan Opgill also pitched in to help.
“The quilts we produce go to individuals and families anyplace they’re needed,” said Margaret Houston, who spearheaded the event. “We check here in the valley first (Cappalappa Family Resource Center) for those who might need them, then we can deliver some to places in Las Vegas like the hospitals and senior centers and any that are not used locally get shipped to the Salt Lake City (LDS) Humanitarian Center which can send them around the world.”
Volunteers worked on the quilts for five hours, breaking only for a short potluck lunch.
Houston said the volunteer turnout was a little light this year but the group still produced some beautiful quilts that will provide warmth, comfort and beauty for those who receive them.
“We may try to schedule another event later in the year,” Houston said. “Maybe more volunteers will be available then.”
