LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The Pot and The Kettle

It has been said that you should not throw rocks if you live in a glass house. In a recent statement after a fire that burned several acres of vacant land in the ravine behind houses located on Lou Street Station 74 Chief Matt Nelson scolded home owners for not keeping the overgrowth behind their houses eliminated (Brushfire Threatens Overton Homes: Progress February 16, 2011).

I’ve attached a photo showing a glance at the Overton Fire Station located on the same ravine that burned; which is the same one that could burn the Overton station. As seen in the photo, the weeds are all the way up to the building and stand four to six feet high. How would Mr. Nelson explain it to the taxpayers if the building that he is Chief of, burned down?

A proper investigation would reveal that a majority of the homeowners have kept the weeds down to the edge of their property but the fire was located on “vacant land” owned by “vacant owners”. Further the firefighters have done too good of a job stopping the fires in the past in this area but the “fuel” continues to accumulate. Even after this fire there is still plenty of “fuel” to burn.

A special thanks to the Progress for the editorial about the financial situation for the Moapa Fire District (MFD) (Why All The Mystery in Fire District Funding: Progress February 16, 2011). It is a great start but more investigation needs to be done as there some serious discrepancies that need to be addressed.

Just as the case with the Clark County School District and the high school gym, Clark County Fire Department (CCFD) has relied on the naivety of this valley and of the MFD to investigate and follow thru on the financial affairs of the district. For too long we have trusted the CCFD to be honest with us. That is pretty hard when there are too many inside being dishonest. I will use as an example the firefighters who used the system to bilk the CCFD out of millions of dollars and not until budget cuts were being made that the practice was “discovered”.

Why would we expect them to be honest with volunteers and a community that does not ask for much? Perhaps it is time to look for leaders in the MFD that are not afraid of political repercussions and losing their “positions” and take a stand for the sake of honesty, not power and position.

And perhaps a good CPA to decipher the CCFD financial books concerning our MFD.
