In an unusual turnaround, local FFA students and Boy Scout from Troop 118 helped out the Moapa Valley Rotary Club. Rotary had scheduled its biannual road cleanup for Saturday, March 19. This annual effort is a labor of love for Rotary members to help keep the community looking its best. This year, however, FFA decided to get a jump on the cleanup by working on the road in conjunction with the Pre-Fair Pigout. Their idea was to clean up after the “pigs” who throw litter out their car windows.
FFA started on the road cleanup at 6:00 am on Saturday morning. They cleaned the sides of State Highway 169 from the area known as ‘Dead Man’s Curve’ all the way north to I-15. They then packed up and headed over to Lin’s Marketplace for the Pre-Fair Pigout, where they had a booth set up.
Boy Scout Troop 118 had a campout scheduled for March 19 which would have conflicted with the cleanup. But the boys wanted to support Rotary in the cleanup effort. So they also came out on Saturday, started at the same point and worked south to just past the Moapa Valley Mortuary.
Rotarian Chris Green was thrilled with the way things turned out. “We were able to focus all our energy today on the Valley Wide Yard Sale,” she stated. “We’re grateful for the work everyone did on the roads. This will give us ‘older folk’ a break next weekend.”
