Golden Glove Regionals To Be Held In Mesquite

Mequite boxer Brandon Everett will compete in the Golden Gloves Western Regionals this weekend in Mesquite.

Some of nation’s top young boxers will invade the CasaBlanca Event Center in Mesquite March 19-20 for the Golden Gloves Western Regionals. With entrants from Nevada, Washington, Oregon and Arizona, a total of 40 boxers will be included in the event. Winners advance to the Golden Gloves Western Regionals April 25-30 in Indianapolis.

Two competitors from Mesquite will be among the field of competitors. Daniel Ramirez, a 2010 graduate of Virgin Valley High School will compete in the 152-pound weight class while 26 year-old Brandon Everett will battle in the 178-pound weight class.

Ramirez has been fighting for eight years, while Everett has been competing for five years.

“These two young boxers are great representatives of Mesquite,” said Matt McCulloch, the manager of the Mesquite Boxing Club Youth Center.

McCulloch stated the event will include 10 weight classes.

“The event this year is bigger than normal primarily because it could lead to qualifying for the 2012 Olympics,” said McCulloch. “All of the competitors in Golden Gloves Western Regionals had to win their state tournaments.”

Dawn Sanchez, the tournament coordinator, said other Southern Nevada competitors will include Andrew Tabiti, a heavyweight who will be in the 201-pound class; and Rydell Gipson, a Super Heavyweight. Both fighters won the tournament last year at the South Point in Las Vegas before advancing to the nationals in Little Rock, Ark.

Reno will be represented by Santos Vasquez, 108 pounds; along with his brother, Oscar, 114 pounds. Santos placed second at the Golden Gloves Nationals in 2010 while Oscar advanced to the quarter-finals.

Weigh-ins will be conducted each day beginning at 7 a.m. The semi-finals beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 19 will be followed by the championship bouts on Sunday, March 20 starting at noon.Tickets are $15 each day for anyone five or older.
