It is baseball season and the Moapa Valley High School Pirates have jumped into a new season in a big way. The team started its season last week playing at the Virgin Valley Cactus Classic.
In the first game, the local team played against Granger from Salt Lake City and lost to the 5A School 11 – 1.
The Pirates are a young team and have been working hard at getting better fundamentally, said head coach Justin Williams. Williams said he is excited to have kids on the team who love the sport and who are willing to learn and continue to work hard.
Moapa played Utah’s state 3A runner up in the next game where they beat Juab of Nephi with a score of 12 – 4.
In the third game of the weekend the Pirates played Hurricane High School and lost a tough battle 8 – 1.
Virgin Valley is the three time state champion team and has a good program again this year. Virgin Valley was the Pirates’ last opponent of the weekend.
Cam Stratton pitched an awesome game and held the Dawgs to two runs through six innings. It was in the sixth that Virgin Valley broke the 2-2 tie with six runs as the time limit expired ending the game.
“We can play with Virgin Valley!” Coach Williams said as he expressed his enthusiasm about the first weekend of the season.
The Pirates play their first home game on Thursday against Desert Pines. They then play Friday at Western High School in Las Vegas.
