They’re at it again. The Moapa Valley High School Culinary Students are working feverishly, not only to enhance their own knowledge but to bring that same knowledge to the community at large.

When I visited their class recently, I was met by many mouth-watering aromas. Grilled cheese, biscuits and gravy, and hash browns and scrambled eggs were being prepared for a nutrition break at school as a fundraiser for the Pro-Start and FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America – formerly the FHA and Home Ec) organizations. They then began to work on a new recipe – “40 cloves and a chicken.”

Teacher, Lorie Terrill, explained that this has been a very good year for this electives class. At the March FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Reno, in the Culinary Arts Division Bronze and Silver medals were won by several of the Cooking Teams. (Bronze – Malissa Otero, Sydney Whiddison and Sam Webber; Silver – Alysa Ramos, L’rysa McMurray, Bryanna Sheldon; 4th Overall with Silver Medal to Alexis Gren, Brandy Thompson and Jasmine Hereford.)

During this same conference, the MVHS Culinary Team (Hannah Hendrix and Naomi Hubert) won high silver honors in the Life Event Planning segment. They will be eligible to compete at the National level in July.

In February the Pro-Start State Competition was held with 28 schools participating. The MVHS Culinary Team took a fifth place medal in the Advanced Foods Class.

These award winning students will be participating in the CC Fair and Rodeo. They will be demonstrating various recipes at a cooking station in the Fine Arts Building. Be sure to take a few minutes to stop by their booth and give them hearty congratulations and do a bit of taste testing.

Members of the public are also encouraged to enter their own baked goods and food items in the Clark County Fair. Information and rules for entries are available at www.ccfair.com.
