Southwest Art On Display At Lost City Museum

A watercolor by Jan Hansen is one of the works on display at the Lost City Museum during the month of March.

The Lost City Museum features works of artists Lucile Carstensen and Jan Hansen during the month of March. The artwork, which will be shown in the museum gallery, is reminiscent of the timeless and poetic beauty of the desert. Oil paintings and watercolors will be the main focus of the show.

Lucile Carstensen has traveled the world and visited galleries, museums and old churches from coast to coast. Observing these amazing sites has inspired her artwork. After retirement, she studied under artists such as Max Bunnell and Carl Purcell. These talented instructors gave Carstensen the confidence to pursue her own artistic dreams.

“Lucile paints from the heart and captures in her art everything from pheasants to the stately mule deer she observes in nearby Pine Valley, Utah,” said museum attendant Jesse Davie. “Her paintings have appeared in shows in St. George and LaVerkin, Utah as well as the Valley of Fire State Park.”

Jan J. Hansen lives in Cedar City, Utah. Exposure to this fascinating locale has led Jan to expand her education. She has studied at BYU and SUU and has taken courses in art and design. Jan says of painting, “I love watercolors. I love the way the colors mix on the painting surface creating their own forms and colors.”

Hansen also works with wheel-thrown pottery and decorative gourds. These different forms of art have been a rewarding experience for her. She is a member of artistic groups such as The Virgin Valley Artists Association and The Moapa Valley Art Guild.

The Lost City Museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5.00; children and members enter free. For more information, please call the museum at (702) 397-2193.
