Fishing On Lake Mead

It’s a 12 hour drive from Woodland, California, to go fishing in Overton, Nevada. My son, Karsten Brooks and his family arrived Friday morning at the Fun & Sun Trailer Park, for a weekend visit and a day on the lake fishing for stripers. Solomon and Mariel Brooks (grandkids) had the time of their life, landing five Striper while trolling in the Overton Arm, north of Marker #18.

We arrived at 2:04 pm (which is a very late start) but knowing that the moon chart predicted the best time to fish was at 2:20 pm, we felt confident that the kids would catch a fish. Using anchovies for bait, we had a reel “Donnybrook” with three fish on all at the same time. When the fishfinder marks 7 to 10 fish or more on the screen at one time we call it “the thirty second rule”. I called out “the 30 second rule” and sure enough, about 30 seconds later we had three fish on and in the box with pictures taken.

We threw out a floating marker, and trolled around that marker for another hour and added two more fish to the box.

Talk about fun! Five fish in 90 minutes. We cleaned the fish but forgot the marker, so it’s still out there marking a hot spot.

I wish I would have put my name on the “floating marker”. Maybe next week it will still be there. It’s made of white foam, about 5 inches in diameter and 24 inches long with a long nylon string and lead ball sinker attached.

By 3:45 pm, the kids were happy to call it a day. By the time we motored back to Echo, the wind came up out of the south, so it was a perfect time to get off the lake.

That night we had striper filets cooked on cedar boards for supper. We also used Panko, (Japanese bread crumbs) and fried up 21 fish fingers with very few leftovers.

Think fish, and hopefully I’ll see you on the lake.
