MVHS Track Holds Its Own In Competition With Bigger Schools

The Moapa Valley Pirates track team traveled to Sunrise Mountain High School in Las Vegas on Thursday, March 17. They met up with two large 4A schools, Sunrise Mountain High School and Las Vegas High School where several Pirate athletes finished in top places. The boys’ team took first place with an overall score of 74 with Spring Mountain scoring 58 and Las Vegas scoring 54. The girls’ team placed 3rd overall.
Athletes from MVHS placing first in their events were: Bowen Call 110 hurdles with a time of 16.50 and 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.60; Josh Thompson 1600 meter run with a time of 4:48; Freshman Jeremy Waite 3200 meter run with a time of 12:42; The 4X400 meter relay with team members Chase Witter, Parker Chappell, Zach Waite, and Bowen Call with a time of 3:37; Jimmy Martin High Jump; Kim Sprague Shotput; and Shelbie Gray Discus.
The lady Pirates finished third with 40 point at Sunrise Mountain.
The teams then traveled to the Heitkotter invitational at Faith Lutheran High School on Saturday. Moapa finished in second behind Foothill High School with 103 team points. Boulder City finished third with 97.5 points.
The Pirates strength lies in the distance and mid-distance events. Chase Witter finished first in both the 400 and 800 meter runs. His times were: 51.07 in the 400 and 2:05 in the 800. Zach Waite finished 5th in the 400 with his time being 55.39. Zach also finished the 200 meters in 25.47 placing 6th overall. Josh Thompson finished first in both the 1600 and the 3200 meter runs.
Bowen Call finished third in the 110 High hurdles and in the 300 intermediates with times of 17.64 and 43.69.
The Pirate 4×100 finished fourth with a time of 47.8. The 4×200 team finished 3rd with a time of 1:37’8. Moapa finished 2nd behind Foothill in the 4×400 running a 3:40.57 and 2nd again behind Foothill the Pirates ran solid time of 8:44.8 in the 4×800.
In the field events, Hayden Cooper high jumped 5-04 for 5th place. Riley Soloman placed 2nd in the long jump flying 18-08.25. Brandon Johnson finished 5th in the triple jump at 38-03.5. Parker Chappel finished 8th with a jump of 36’03.
On the girls side, the ladies finished 5th as a team with a score of 51.25. They were behind Bishop Gorman and ahead of Boulder city that had 44 team points.
The girls scoring points were Chelsea Olige in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.79. Ashley Noto won the 300 hurdles with a time of 54.30 and finished 6th in the 100 hurdles her time was 18.81.
Malary Reid finished 5th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 57.69. The 4×100 team placed 5th with a time of 58.38. They finished ahead of Boulder who was 6th. The 4×200 team finished 6th behind 5th place Boulder. Moapa’s time was 2:05.6. The 4×400 team finished 5th with a time of 5:05.4. The 4×800 finished fourth with a time of 12:09.4.
