The Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, March 18 at the newly remodeled and re-opened Sportsmans Bar in downtown Overton. In attendance at the ceremony were members of the Chamber and its Board, owners and staff at the Bar and some of the Sportsmans valued clietele.

A long-time fixture on Moapa Valley Blvd. since the early 1950s, the Sportsman’s Bar reportedly ran into business trouble and had to close its doors in October 2009.

But local businessman, Kent Slight, purchased the bar last year. Slight then poured a good deal of time and money into refurbishing the aging establishment, said Kent’s son, Josh Slight, who is now managing the Sportsman.

The Sportsman now has a handsome new back bar area; cabinetry in dark wood built from ceiling to floor behind the bar with inset HD plasma TV screens. In addition, Slight replaced the roof on the exterior of the building as well as the ceiling in the interior. The bar also received updated carpet for the floors. And last but not least, the Sportsman has 14 new slot machines for its customers.

The bar had a soft opening back in late January. But the official grand opening was delayed until the gaming license was finalized.

Since the early opening, the Sportsman has been very busy, Josh Slight said. “We have picked up a lot of clientele in a short time,” he said. “A lot of the business that the Sportsmans used to have in the community has returned. And also a younger crowd that have come of age since it was closed.”

Slight said that the bar’s St. Patricks Day event held last week was a great success. The bar has also used its big screen TVs to host NASCAR nights for local fans. The staff is currently gearing up for the Clark County Fair when the week will be full of nightly events with live bands and other activities, Slight said.

The Sportsmans Bar will be holding an official Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, March 26 beginning at the bar’s opening at 8:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. To celebrate, the bar will have drink specials that day and a barbecue will be held beginning at 4:00 p.m. Live band, Closure, will make an appearance beginning at 9:00 p.m. Members of the public must be 21 years old to enter the Sportsman.
