Albert Powers

Albert Oliver Powers died On March 20, 2011, at the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City at age 85, where he was cared for with tenderness for the last five years.

He was born November 29, 1925, to Floyd George and Lois Logie Powers in Los Angeles, CA. where he grew up with his siblings, William, Barbara and Floyd. Al met his wife, Afton Murphy, of St. Thomas, NV in 1942 and they married in 1945.

He served as a Radioman 1st Class on the USS Mobile in WW II and was proud of his service. His children respected Al as an honest, hardworking man who was true to his word. He was a member of the Teamsters Union during his working days and retired from the Nevada Test Site. He was happiest when he was working on a project, fixing something, or helping a friend or fellow veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Afton, his brother Floyd, and his children Albert Michael, Dennis (Kathleen), Gary (Diana Smith), Timothy (Marianne), Maureen (Jimmy Vaccaro), Kevin (Lanae), Susan (Jim O’Brien), Brian, and Patricia (Dave Hayden), 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Services were held Friday March 25, 2011 at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to: NVAL (Nevada Veteran Assistance League), Attention: Angela, 100 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the Mariner Cove for the loving care they provided to Al these past years and emotional support for his family in his final days.
