The first Spring edition of the Trees on Wheels program in which the Educational Farm Foundation of Moapa Valley and the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) joined forces to make low-cost Nevada native and low-water use trees available to Moapa Valley residents was a resounding success.

Thirty-five residents or agencies ordered more than 550 trees, shrubs and grasses which were delivered to the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) office on Moapa Valley Boulevard and then picked up last Friday and Saturday.

“The Trees on Wheels program has usually been held every fall,” said Carol Bishop, UNCE educator and vice president of the farm foundation. “Because NDF had a surplus of trees this spring we were given the opportunity to have an early program this year.”

Trees, shrubs and grasses purchased by local residents this spring included New Mexican Privet, several species of Acacia, Horsetail, Coolibah Eucalyptus, Mondel Pines, Lilacs and Chaste Trees among many, many others, Bishop said. Prices for the plants were $3.25 for one-gallon, $8.50 for five-gallon and $15.75 for 15-gallon.

The vast majority of the plants delivered were extremely hearty and should flourish in the Moapa Valley area provided they are given proper care.

“We plan on having another Trees on Wheels sale this fall and would encourage anyone interested to watch the paper for the exact date,” Bishop said.
