LETTER: Insulted Cat Lover

I have a few issues with a recent column by Dr. Larry Moses regarding cats (No One Asked Me But…: Progress April 6, 2011).

Although Dr. Moses obviously isn’t a cat lover, his conclusion that all cats are annoying is a testament to the fact that he isn’t a “Pet Person”, in spite of his list of pets over the years.

According to his article, dogs are OK. Dogs love unconditionally. By simply giving them food and water, they will become your best friend for life.

Cats, on the other hand, are more discerning when it comes to their love and attachments. It’s not enough to simply feed a cat and expect that you will receive its affection. They see right through this ploy and demand respect and more importantly, love. Food and water doesn’t mean you own them. No wonder all Dr. Moses’ cats left for other places!

When you take on the responsibility of adopting any animal, that means not only feeding it, but spaying and neutering as well as keeping it from harm and caring for injuries. I realize this is a ranching/farming community and that a lot of people have grown up with barn cats, however even barn cats have been respected for the important role they play in keeping the rodent population under control, thereby decreasing disease and lost crops.

Dr. Moses’ opinion is an insult to those of us who love and revere cats by implying they have no useful purpose in life but to annoy, (“…they laid no eggs and could not be eaten so I am at a loss as to what earthly good they were.”). We that truly understand the gift that God has given us in our purrrfectly wonderful companions and working animals, can take some small amount of consolation knowing that Dr. Moses won’t be blessed with this kind of love.

In this case Dr. Moses, “No One Asked Me But…”, you should have kept this nasty little opinion to yourself.
