No One Asked Me But… (May 11, 2011)
By DR. LARRY MOSES
No one asked me but… Osama Bin Laden is dead. The national news channels have been carrying the jubilation expressed throughout the land.
It is good that this evil man is no longer walking the earth, but scenes of Americans gathering in throngs outside the White House and Times Square struck a strange note. It brought back memories of the Muslim world joyfully demonstrating at the death of 3,000 Americans in the Twin Towers. Even worse, it gave credence to a man who deserves no honor. It would be like celebrating the smashing of a cockroach in the kitchen. You are glad he is gone, but there should be no great fuss about it.
It is not as if this closes a chapter on evil for there are still many more roaches out there. The world is better off without him, but it would be better not to celebrate his death.
The Special Forces SEAL Team Six got him; I would have expected no less of them.
A side note on the name of the group. When the original commander of Seal Team Six was asked about the name, he explained that at the time there were only three SEAL teams. The first two were designated teams one and two. When he was commissioned to form the third team, he called it SEAL Team Six as a joke. He thought it would make those who tracked the American military spend resources trying to find out where SEAL Teams Four and Five were and what they were doing. I love military humor.
I am not surprised these elite troops did their jobs. I am only amazed it took ten years and still feel had we not been so concerned with our relationship with Pakistan, it would have been much sooner.
This whole episode is a real mystery. Nineteen of the attackers of The Trade Centers were Saudi Arabians. Osama Bin Laden is a Saudi by birth. However, we used this attack as the reason for taking down Saddam Hussein’s government in Iraq. Some do not understand that Osama Bin Laden hated Saddam as badly as we did.
Many people are upset that we found no Weapons of Mass Destruction when we overthrew the government of Iraq. One needs to understand WMD had no more to do with the invasion of Iraq than did the destruction in New York City. It was merely a question of ridding the world of a mass murderer who had threatened the Senior President Bush.
Osama Bin Laden was also a mass murderer who has been responsible for the killing of countless Muslims as well as the three thousand Americans on 9/11. Had they not buried him at sea, they could have put on his tombstone: “Here Lies Osama Bin Laden. Mass Murderer. Needed killing.”
It is interesting that apparently Bin Laden had been living in Abbottabad for the last five years. While Americans had been picturing him living in caves he was in reality living in relative luxury in a compound very near the Pakistani equivalent of West Point.
This town also housed a major intelligence operation for the Pakistani government.
American newscasters report the city of Abottabad is a tourist destination. Really? I cannot hardly think of anywhere in the Middle East, but especially Pakistan, as a tourist destination. Wouldn’t you just love to spend a weekend in lovely downtown Islamabad?
There seems to be some concern among some people that Bin Laden was not armed when he was shot to death. This brings to mind a quote from Clint Eastwood’s movie Unforgiven. Clint has entered the saloon where his friend’s dead body was on display. Will Munny (Clint’s character) asked who owns the place and when the owner stepped up, he shot and killed him.
Little Bill Daggett (the local sheriff) said, “Well, sir, you … just shot an unarmed man!”
Will Munny replied: “Well, he should have armed himself if he’s going to decorate his saloon with my friend.”
Well if Bin Laden wanted to be the number one terrorist in the world, he should have armed himself. I really don’t care if he was armed or unarmed. I do not believe any of those in the Twin Towers, or aboard the planes that hit the Pentagon, or crashed in the Pennsylvania field were armed.
Some are upset because a woman who may have been Bin Laden’s wife was wounded. Bin Laden has been responsible for the deaths of countless women and children, mostly Muslims.
Some indicated that he should have been brought back to the states for a trial. There is an old western saying which goes “you don’t courthouse a varmint.”
The Special Forces SEAL, who shot Bin Laden, did the world a favor. I agree with Mark Twain “I have never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries I have enjoyed.”
Unfortunately, the death of this man will not end the conflict with Muslim extremetists. One should remember these Muslim extremists are responsible for the death of many more Muslims than those not of the faith. One would think Muslim moderates might more willingly join with those outside the faith to put an end to these madmen.
No one asked me but… I want to take a moment to thank all those who came to Books, Etc. on April 30 to pick up a book and a cookie. I was able to sell thirty books and my wife gave out over forty cookies. I had instructed her that those who did not buy a book could not have a cookie but apparently, she once again failed to follow my instructions.
It was great to see friends and family come out in support of this effort.
I would again like to encourage those of you in the community to visit Sally’s store for you will find a variety of items for gifts.
It is important that the town have a bookstore. Besides no one else will sell my novels and I left ten with Sally.
Thought of the week… “As I said…the American soldier was just a paper tiger.”
– Osama Bin Laden.
