As part of the M week celebration, the Moapa Valley High School held its annual Mr. M competition on Thursday, May 12. The traditional contest was held in the Ron Dalley theater as an assembly as soon as the high school classes let out.

The competition was a little different this year. Instead of having only senior competitors, it was opened to all grade levels. Two contestants in each grade were selected by vote to try out for the contest. From the Freshmen class, Tanner Goodrich and Logan Call were chosen. Then, came Sophomores Skylar Hill and Kaden Kelson with Juniors Brandon Johnson and Branson Anderson. Finally, Senior competitors were Kelan Weiss and Ty Askeroth.

To begin, the contestants were brought out in two groups of four to complete the interview portion of the contest. They were asked questions like “If you could be anyone for a day, who would you be?” and “What superhero are you most like?”

The three judges were MVHS teachers, Jared Bushman, Kim Hardy, and Matt Messer. They were given a rubric in which to grade the Mr. M hopefuls. The judges marked a score from 1-5 on details such as how confident the contestants were or if they incorporated the audience in their talent.

“The actual competition didn’t impress me,” Bushman said. “I found their talent and interviews to be the most important. That showed me who was really having fun. The boys that enjoyed the activities most looked more confident.”

After the interviews, the talent portion began. Talents such as dancing, pencil tapping, tumbling, cooking, playing guitar, and baton twirling were demonstrated before the audience.

Then came the competition portion. First, the competitors had to create the best drawing on a poster with their finger painting skills. The second contest was a tissue extraction with their non-dominant hand. Whoever tore all the tissues out of the tissue box first won that contest.

Then, all the boys danced as the judges tallied up the scores and found the winner.

Senior Ty Askeroth received the Mr. M runner-up award. But Freshmen Logan Call was awarded the Mr. M title overall.

“He was the most confident,” Kim Hardy said. “He put himself out there more than the others while not being obscene or disgusting or boring.”

Call seemed stunned to receive the award. “I was surprised but it’s pretty awesome,” he said. “I’m really excited.”
