Though the fall football season still seems far away, it is just around the corner for the organizers of the local Youth Football USA league. Early signups are coming up on June 1 and the league is under new leadership. Taking over as league president this year is Dennis Whitmore of Logandale with vice presidents John Hymas and Ben Cornwall.
“The previous leadership: Todd Robison, Kevin Willard and Jim Davis; are stepping down after more than 10 years of running the league,” said John Hymas. “They have grown the program and left it stronger and better than ever. We appreciate all that they have done.”
The league has offered fun to a generation of youth. It has also provided a strong feeder program to high school football in the community. “Just look at what it has done,” Hymas said. “To some extent we have seen the fruits of this program in the repeat State Championship teams that the high school has seen over the years.”
This year there are plans to expand the league. The league has traditionally been for 6th grade aged kids only. But this year it will be offered to kids in grades 4-8 with a different team planned for each grade level.
The local league has joined with Youth Football USA to compete in the St. George area, Hymas explained. This gives the league a lot of options for competing with teams in a variety of different age levels, he said.
Early signups for youth Pirate Football will be held on Wednesday, June 1 from 5-8 pm at the Logandale Fairgrounds Fine Arts Building. Interested youth and parents are encouraged to come that night and meet the coaches. Fees for early registration are $169.
