The halls and classes at Grant M. Bowler Elementary School were filled with famous historic figures last week. The school’s third grade class presented their Chautauqua reports last week to classmates and parents.
The Chautauqua tradition at Bowler has taken place near the end of every school year for the past twelve years.
Students choose a notable person in history, learn about his/her life, write and memorize a short speech and then present it to their classmates in the character of that person. The students even dress up as their hero and tell facts about their lives in the first person to make it seem like the historical figure is actually there, speaking to the audience.
At the end of the week, two students from each class were chosen as finalists to repeat their presentations in an assembly with and audience of parents, all the third graders, and fourth graders.
The assembly took place on Thursday, May 26. The third grade students began by singing a song called “Everyday Heroes.” Bowler music teacher, Trish Anderson, led them as they sang and played on their recorders.
Then, the presentations began. From Mrs. Wimer’s class Kelci Cardinal portrayed Julia Child and Jonah Gifford was Martin Luther King Jr.
From Mrs. Waite’s class came Preston Humes as Thomas Jefferson and Cobe Evans as George Washington.
From Mrs. Eval’s class was Roy Huddell as Lewis Braille and Kaitlyn Anderson as Thomas Jefferson.
Carson Traasdahl dressed as Theodore Roosevelt and Francesca Wahl acted as Sacagawea in Mrs. Bush’s class.
Finally, from Mrs. Bartle’s class came Spencer Raban as Milton Hershey and Russell Bodily as Christopher Columbus.
“They have worked so hard and done such a great job,” commented third grade teacher Jolynne Wimer.
