No One Asked Me But… (June 15, 2011)
By DR. LARRY MOSES
No one asked me but… Are politicians just nuts or don’t they think? Do they really believe that they are so special that they can do what they want without consequences?
I am trying very hard not to join in all the laughter and great jokes that can be made about the plight of New York Congressman Anthony Weiner. This being a family newspaper, I will control myself but those who know me know I am falling on the floor with laughter.
I don’t really care that Wiener is one of the most obnoxious, egotistical, offensive, aggressively hostile left wing liberals in Congress. His constituents knew that when they elected him. In fact, those are the very traits that got him elected. However, stupidity was not one of the apparent flaws in his character; it just kind of snuck up on him.
In a day and age when one out of five serious relationships start with an internet connection, the fact that courting might take place on the internet should not come as a surprise to anyone. Most of the Congressman’s tweets were done prior to his marriage and so there was little in the way of unfaithfulness to his wife. However, was Weiner so stupid as to not understand what is placed on the internet is not that private?
The Congressman’s crime is not the sexting that he was involved in but his lying to the media about it for ten days. There may be some question as to the improper use of Congressional computers to carry on these activities but that will be merely an excuse to get rid of this embarrassment to the Democratic Party as well as the nation.
Should Congressman Weiner resign? Of course he should. Will he resign? Who knows?
In an independent survey conducted in his Congressional district, 51% of the respondents said he should not resign and only 31% thought he should. Probably those 31% did not vote for him in the first place. If the people he represents are not offended by his behavior, why should an obscure columnist for a local Nevada newspaper care?
There are those who want to place Wiener’s transgressions in the same category with Senator Ensign’s indiscretions, but this is bogus for two reasons. First, Weiner did not physically cheat on his wife. Secondly, Weiner is a Democrat. Right-wing Republicans must be held to a higher moral standard than Left-wing Democrats because they campaign on moral issues.
If the adult bookstore owner is caught in his motel room viewing porn movies it is much different than when a popular TV evangelist is caught in the same indiscretion. If a politician runs on the grounds of the Religious Right, he should be held to those standards. I don’t believe, though I could be wrong, Congressman Weiner ran on the principles of the Moral Majority.
The extreme left of the Democrat Party, which Weiner is a proud member, surely is not shocked by the activities of the Congressman. They championed the cause of President Clinton during his failure to remain loyal to his wife and family. Charlie Rangel was defended by the party. The Weiner-roast is nothing compare to these transgressions. (Okay, I can only control myself so long.)
The thing Congressman Weiner should understand is that if you are going to be the type of person he is, there is little leeway for your behavior. People can forgive the humble, but they rejoice in seeing the arrogant falter.
There is little in the demeanor of Congressman Weiner that calls up sympathy from the people. It reminds me of the book Perfect Storm; it is one of the few books I have read that when all of the characters died, I didn’t care because they were all so obnoxious anyway.
Who is going to shake their heads and say this is too bad because Anthony was such a nice boy. Maybe his mother, but who knows?
No one asked me but… L/Cpl. Peter Core and his dog Duke were scouring a road looking for IED’s in Helmund Province, Afghanistan on May 28, 2011, when his unit came under heavy fire. L/Cpl. Core took a fatal wound protecting the corrupt regime of President Hamid Karzai. The Marines responded with heavy fire driving the Taliban force into a house where a firefight ensued. The Marines called for an air strike as resistance continued. An unmanned drone dropped ordinance on the house silencing the opposition.
President Karzai’s response was a demand for an apology and cessation of bombing houses in Afghanistan. The American response was to apologize for attacking the house. The only mistake the U.S. government made was not following that apology with a complete withdrawal of all American forces from the country.
Karzai indicated that if not all bombing of houses in Afghanistan ceased immediately, he would consider American troops as an invading force and act accordingly. Does he not understand that he is in power only through the grace of the 100,000 U.S. troops in the country? The minute the U.S. pulls troops out of Afghanistan the Taliban will overwhelm that bunch of misfits the U.S. has been trying to develop into a national military force to defend Karzai and his criminal cohorts. It really doesn’t matter whether we pull out now or ten years from now, Karzai and his supporters will never be able to stand against the Taliban without help from the United States.
It is time that America stop losing its best in an ungrateful, unmanageable, and unenlightened country. We went to Afghanistan after a fugitive and found ourselves in the middle of a civil war.
The Russians tried controlling the Taliban and Russia was almost destroyed, not by the Taliban, but by internal problems. America is now edging closer to the economic disaster Russia barely avoided by recognizing the problems their efforts in Afghanistan was causing within their borders.
It is time for Americans to realize Bin Laden is dead and so is our mission in Afghanistan.
Thought of the week… Of all the stratagems, to know when to quit is the best.
